A guarantee is only useful if you know what it covers before you need it. Ours is straightforward. If a fault appears in the work we carried out, and the cause is our workmanship, we come back and put it right at no cost to you. The cover runs for ten years from the date the job is completed, and the details are set out on a certificate we hand over at the end of the job. It is our own guarantee, given by the business itself, not a policy provided by an insurer.
What the guarantee covers
The guarantee covers the way we did the work. In practice that means faults such as:
- slates or tiles slipping because they were not fixed correctly, or ridge and hip tiles working loose where we bedded or fixed them;
- leaks at a flashing (the lead or similar weathering dressed over the junction where a slope meets a wall or a stack) that we formed or dressed;
- a flat roof membrane in EPDM (one continuous sheet of synthetic rubber) or GRP (a fibreglass resin finish laid in place) lifting or failing at a joint or edge we made;
- leadwork in a valley or parapet gutter (a lead-lined channel hidden behind the parapet, the short wall that rises above the eaves) that splits because of how we laid it.
It applies to the area of roof we worked on, as described in your quotation and on the certificate.
What falls outside it
A workmanship guarantee cannot cover everything that might happen to a roof over ten years. It does not extend to:
- parts of the roof we did not work on, or work carried out by someone else;
- damage from storms, falling trees, impact, fire or other events outside our control, which are usually matters for your buildings insurance;
- normal wear and weathering of materials over time;
- problems caused by blocked gutters, outlets or downpipes that have not been kept clear;
- alterations to the roof after we finish, such as satellite dishes, aerials, solar panels or roof windows fitted by others;
- defects in materials themselves, which fall under the manufacturer's own warranty. We pass those warranties on to you and will help you use them.
Where we repaired part of an older roof, the guarantee covers our repair. It does not cover the original roof around it, which continues to age at its own rate. We will have explained this at the survey.
Making a claim
- Ring 01225 285181, or write to info@empireroofingbath.co.uk. Give the address, the approximate date of the work and a short description of the problem. Photographs help when they can be taken without climbing anything.
- If water is coming in, tell us. We prioritise leaks and make the roof safe first.
- We arrange a visit, inspect the area and photograph what we find.
- If the fault is in our workmanship, we put it right at no charge. If it is not, we explain the cause and, if you want, quote to repair it.
Please do not ask another firm to alter the work before we have seen it, as that can make the cause hard to establish.
Keeping the guarantee valid
Under our policy there is no registration form and nothing to pay. Keep the certificate and your invoice somewhere safe, and keep the gutters and outlets around the roof clear of leaves and moss. If you are selling the property, your conveyancer may ask for a copy of the certificate; the terms on it explain whether the cover passes to a new owner.
Your statutory rights
The guarantee is an extra promise from us. It sits on top of your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, which require a service to be carried out with reasonable care and skill, and it does not replace or reduce them. Our terms and conditions explain the wider contract, and our complaints procedure sets out what to do if you are unhappy with how a claim is handled.
This guarantee wording is a starting point and is flagged for review. The operator should ask a qualified legal adviser to confirm it matches the certificate issued to customers before relying on it.
